180,000 Refugees Displaced from Yemen since March 2015

The UN reported the US-backed coalition in Yemen has created more than more than 180,000 refugees since March 2015. Yemeni refugees have fled to neighbouring Middle Eastern and North African countries, with 51,000 refugees living in camps in Oman, 39,880 in Saudi Arabia and 36,162 in Djibouti.

After the UN-brokered peace deal broke down in August, the US announced it would sell 130 Abrams battle tanks, 20 armoured recovery vehicles and other equipment, worth about $1.15 billion, to Saudi Arabia.

An increasing number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Yemen are attempting to return to their homes, with 24% of the 184,000 IDPs now in the process of returning home. However, IDPs continue to face the challenge of acquiring basic necessities, such as food, shelter and drinking water. As the conflict continues, the average length of time IDPs have to stay away from home is increasing, with more 89% displaced for more than ten months.
