EU provides €83 million to Greece in emergency funding

Through the new Emergency Assistance Instrument, the European Commission (EC) yesterday announced a further €83 million is to be provided Greece as emergency funds, with immediate effect.

The €83 million funding brings the total emergency funding received by Greece to €264 million since 2015.

The EC press release went on to outline the humanitarian organisations which will receive the funding, and operations they will carry out in Greece to assist in refugee management.

Distribution of the funds is as follows:

Funds will then be used to carry out the following:

The funding provided by the Emergency Assistance Instrument and the projects outlined above are welcome developments in the Greek refugee situation; however there is still little sign of acknowledgement of the other crises in Europe, such as in Calais, and the humanitarian efforts here remain overshadowed by the highly criticised ‘one-for-one’ EU-Turkey agreement.
